For a game that came out in the late 90's, this remake is surprisingly well made and retains the fun and simplistic value of the original for old time fans and newcomers alike. Overall, Abe's Oddysee is not a difficult game but can prove frustrating at times due to the somewhat clunky nature of Abe and the speed run achievement. If you have missed any other achievement you can utilize chapter select to mop them up. Three hours is more than enough time to finish all levels but this will take some practice to memorize layouts and the locations of secret portals. Your third playthrough will be focused solely on rescuing all Mudokons while achieving the quickest time. It's worth noting that you can't change the difficulty of your first playthrough so you will need to create a second save file. This is best done on Easy difficulty so you can go through chapter select to net the speed run achievement in your third playthrough. Your second playthrough will be the 'bad' playthrough focusing on not rescuing Mudokons and achieving the bad ending. If you are feeling adventurous, you can always try for the speed run achievement in this playthrough but it will be easier to attempt on Easy as there is a little more room for error given you will have more health. This playthrough will net you all the story related achievements, several miscellaneous achievements and Normal and Hard achievements. Players of the original shouldn't have too much trouble as the default difficulty for the original is the Hard difficulty on the remake. Some areas will also have additional challenges such as extra mines. The differences between Easy and Hard is the number of hits it takes for you to die, how many items you can carry and the window for disarming mines. It's recommended your first playthrough be on Hard and focused on rescuing all Mudokons in order to learn all their locations and to give you a sense of layouts etc. While some of the mechanics can be a little clunky at times, overall the game is relatively easy and even today is an enjoyable playthrough. Most of the achievements will come naturally as you progress through the game with only a small number of them requiring a little more practice and patience. Abe's Oddysee is a side-scrolling platformer in which you assume the role of hapless Mudokon worker, Abe, who is tasked with rescuing his fellow Mudokons from their enslavement at Rupture Farms.Īlthough death will come often, the frequent checkpoints and added quick save option means that you won't have to replay large parts if you make a mistake. This remake plays almost exactly the same as the original so fans of the original should have no trouble jumping in and getting through the game.
